Volkswagen's newest concept, which was released at the Geneva Motor Show, is the Amarok Canyon Concept. The Canyon is a tweaked and repainted version of the humble Amarok pickup that celebrates freestyle kayaking. Freestyle kayaking, for the uninitiated, is a sort of kayaking in place: kayakers find a standing wave and use it to propel them through a series of crazy freestyle moves. From where we're sitting, it looks a bit like halfpipe snow or skateboarding bundled with a paddle.

Keeping that in mind, Volkswagen decided to tweak its Amarok pickup in honor of freestyle kayaking and other extreme sports. The truck is raised 1.6 inches and, thanks to some larger off-road tires, is roughly 3.3 inches taller than the standard model. Those tires, which are 18-inch, 65-series off-road models, sit inside wheel arches that were flared out by about 1.4 inches. If you're short and like freestyle kayaking, don't worry: the Amarok Canyon has retractable side steps to help owners cope with the increased ride height. The Volkswagen is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 178 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. As with all sure-footed pickup trucks, this one offers all-wheel drive: the Amarok Canyon has all-wheel drive that also features a low-range gearbox and a locking rear differential for extra help in low-traction and off-road situations.

This being a truck that celebrates an extreme sport, it wouldn't be complete without plenty of blacked-out trim pieces and a garish color -- and the Amarok Canyon doesn't disappoint. The truck is painted in a shade of Baladi Orange, sits on wheels painted in a color VW calls "High Gloss Adamantium Dark." On top of the truck: four auxiliary lights mounted to a rail that's painted the same shade. In the bed, Volkswagen placed two carbon fiber kayaks, and the inside of the tailgate is molded to mount a set of two paddles. Inside, the Amarok Canyon gets a set of three auxiliary gauges showing tilt and climbing angles, as well as two-tone seats with Baladi Orange contrast stitching. Is the Amarok Canyon headed to production? It's anyone's guess, since Volkswagen didn't announce any firm plans. Instead, the automaker said the Canyon concept shows the customization possibilities of the truck, which makes us think it's the European equivalent of a SEMA concept.
