Magna's shapely concept starts with a long, sloping windshield and greenhouse that comes to a blunt rear-end, reminiscent of cars like the Honda CR-Z and Toyota Prius. By default, the car operates as a five-passenger, hardtop sport utility vehicle with a bottom-hinged tailgate. From there, things get interesting. The roof is split into two sections above the B-pillars. Each section is comprised of a fabric roof with embedded glass panels, and can slide and stack to create an opening. Pull back the front portion, and the MILA has a sunroof. Pull back both sections, and the MILA serves as a funky open-air convertible of sorts.
Interestingly, there's a third option: a pickup. Magna says the rear seat module can be folded up and slid towards the front seats, effectively forming a rear cab wall that seals against the top structure. Stow the rear top and lower the rear windows, the Magna MILA theoretically boasts an open cargo box. This isn't the first time we've seen such a top in action. Citroen's C3 Pluriel, which was built from 2003 to 2010, boasted a sliding fabric roof section with removable side bows. Magna's system appears to trump the Pluriel by protecting the driver and front passenger from the elements when functioning as a pickup truck.
